I was watching Euphoria the other day (Can’t wait for season three already), and in one episode Rue was talking about how people and societies like to define others by a single moment of their life—often times a low rock bottom moment.

It got me thinking, and it got me questioning things like: Why do we see things in black and white? Peg people in boxes and try to put labels on them? How do we get out of that mindset? How can we reprogram our minds to feel safe and in control without having to put labels on people? (To make sense of things, and life in general)

I’ll be upfront, I don’t have the answer and I’m not perfect with this either. But, I do try to be conscious of it. And I think that’s all we can do.

Realize that people might be going through something really difficult in their life at the moment, and compassion is the best thing to offer.

The other day I went to breakfast with my mom at this tiny cafe, and we got to talking with the owner towards the end of the meal and she asked me if we were related to which I replied yes. She had lost her mom not too long ago and started tearing up a bit, and we talked about my dad’s passing as well. We ended up, the three of us, with tears in our eyes talking about death and love— a conversation filled with compassion that I felt so deeply in my heart.

I think we all have our own issues in life, and others (strangers, and even close friends and family) may not always see what we may be going through while walking our own path.

Another possible solution is to release the expectation of perfection (I’m speaking directly to myself, since I will still think about past conversations of what I could’ve said or done better).

We all make mistakes. After all, we’re only human.

In short: try and be conscious of being kind ♥️ It goes a long way, sometimes more than you would expect.

Love,

The Serene Sol
